Mom Needs Help with Potty Training

by Pat on Feb 7, 2010 at 8:12 PM Filed in autism questions | Stories from Readers
My 4 1/2 year old autistic son was finally pee pee trained about 6 months ago. However, he absolutely refuses to go poo poo on the potty. I have read that this is a common problem, but have not come across very much info as to how to move forward in this area. It is obvious to me that he is afraid to go on the potty. I have tried anything & everything I know how to move him past this fear, to no avail. He is very much aware of when he needs to go, and will even ask me for a diaper when he gets the urge. But sitting him on the toilet becomes a battle of the wills, which is a no win situation. Any suggestions?

I had a hard time trying to potty train my son...He's seventeen now...I started at the age 3 to potty train. The day care charged me 150 dollars a week to potty train, they had no success, but left me with empty pocket.

This was hard, I was a single mother, his father couldn't accept our child having autism. I was determined to help our child (Albert) So I would pick the same time every day to start potty training him. He wouldn't at first, it was a power struggle. So I started making it part of my schedule, with pictures. I would put in on the wall, so he could see it with pictures.

This was a great challenge to me, I would leave him there. Sitting along the side of him reading a book to him. I enjoyed reading to him, so this took awhile but it works.

If your child doesn't like you reading to him ...try singing to make up a song .
Hope this helps.

You have to have a schedule...every important.

My advice would be to start with a potty chair.

We have had the same problem. Our kiddo is almost 5 1/2 and we are still working on the pooping the potty. About 2 months ago he just started going in the potty more frequently, then he had a relapse when his dad was in the hospital. I know he can do it, I take away his favorite toy when there is poop in the pants and he has to earn it back by pooping in the potty. It is super frustrating and is really the thing that sets me off the most of his behaviors. Smile

Fear or phobia is something the comes to every individual. It might originate from a traumatic situation so it is becoming normal that it's hard to remove the fear to everybody.
