Mom Seeks Swimming Lessons for Son

by Pat on Apr 18, 2009 at 8:30 PM Filed in autism questions

Does anyone know where I could take my son for swimming lessons? He would need someone who was willing to work with his high anxiety and also his coordination problems.

My son who has high functioning ASD had a lot of anxiety, so we started at a YMCA here in Nebraska with a zero-depth entry pool, and super small classes (3 or 4 to one instructor). He could get into the water at his own pace. Funny enough, watching Michael Phelps in the Olympics also helped with some of the anxiety....still scared of 'deep water' (up to his chest), but we've doing lessons continuously for over a year and he's made great progress!!!

It is good to stay active with regular exercise. There are many programs that can help you out. I would try by simply looking on some search engines.

You need to specify your location for people to help you, however I would suggest attempting regular swimming lessons, your son may be more capable than you think.

Check the local schools. Many of them offer a program called Swim America. Kids work through several stages of swimming skills. Each stage is a little harder but easy to achieve, giving the kids a sense of accomplishment. Individual instruction is available for kids who need it too.
