Parents Ask About Asperger's and Agression

by Pat on Jan 30, 2009 at 9:25 AM Filed in Autism and Stress | Autism Family Facts | Parenting Autistic Children | Stories from Readers
Does aggression ever get better. My son has aspergers and he becomes aggressive at school frequently. At home he is ok, but I fear for the future. He is 5 years old.

My personal experience is that aggression tends to get worse. Some of it can be controlled with medication. However, outside of your home, most people your son will encounter are not prepared to deal with Aspergers. They will do the wrong things in an attempt to control him that will usually result in more aggressive behavior on his part. Pat

My son has Aspergers and is about to get kicked out of school. He is agressive towards teachers, students and other faculty; he uses foul language and refuses to do his work, he just goes to sleep. I dont know what to do. He is already on lots of medication but when I called his doctor yesterday he told me there was nothing he could do and that maybe I should take some parenting classes! What!?! I have read every book under the sun and have used every reward, punishment, etc.. The problem is at school not at home, he is really such a sweet and very helpful and polite boy(he is 11 by the way). I'm LOST!!!

Have you tried changes to diet? I don't know how that works for Asperger's but I have heard some pretty incredible results for some autistic spectrum children. Research gluten free and dairy free diets. It can't hurt to try.

Asperger syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder, and people with it therefore show significant difficulties in social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and atypical use of language are frequently reported

Success is not measured by what you accomplish but by the opposition you have encountered, and the courage with which you have maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds.
