Reader Says Unruly Child is Unacceptable

by Pat on Jan 18, 2009 at 9:19 PM Filed in Stories from Readers
First, let me say I wish all children and adults with autism wellness and Godspeed. However, I do not feel children with severe autism should be allowed to disobey public school rules, act out in church, in a restaurant or anywhere else the public at large attends. Please, please, please understand we all have our own problems to deal with in life and an unruly child (autistic or not) is just unacceptable in certain situations. I know it takes a village, but unless you and your child/adult are a part of my village, please do not ACT OUT!!

My child has the right to go anywhere at anytime just because he is Autistic does not mean he should be punished. Maybe you need to take a look at yourself in the mirror....open your eyes 1 in 150 children are being diagnosed pretty soon you will not be able to go anywhere without Autism touching your life so I tell you what, you stay home and we will take our children wherever we like. Shame on you. A rude Adult is the real unacceptable here and that is you.

People wishing to listen to a free podcast on autism and Christianity might want to listen to "Why is there Autism? A Christian Perspective" at www.mic.mypodcast.com They are put out by Midnight in Chicago.

Would you like parents of autistic children to stay hidden in their homes and never go out in public? Everyone has a right to go out in public and go to a restaurant. I try to keep my children under control so that they don't bother others, but people who don't understand autism or care to learn about it are quick to judge the bad parenting skills. Please, if you can do a better job, there will be thousands of people seeking your advice.

Do you also believe that people with Tourette's should stay away because they may react in a way that is in keeping with their diagnosis?

Do you also believe that people with Diabetes should stay away because they may react in a way that is in keeping with their diagnosis?

If not, then why do you believe that people with Autism should stay away because they may react in a way that is in keeping with their diagnosis?

Honestly, sometimes the outrageous things that people say out of ignorance (lack of education on the subject) makes me shake my head!

BTW, I listened to the podcast mentioned by Thomas D. Taylor and I have to say that it is definitely a 'must hear' podcast that does a good job explaining Autism from a Christian perspective.

Your comment's are just appalling, do you believe that parent's who take their children/Adult's to school or anywhere else like's to have their child make a scene. Do you know the difference between disobeying public school rules and that they just can't comprehend that they are doing this?

When you have walked in my shoes, and have an autistic child then maybe you could comment on it. My son was raised to behave himself where ever we go since he little. But sometime's because he doesn't speak it is hard for us to know when maybe he has a headache, or he's doesn't feel well that his behavior changes and we have to figure it out. I just hope that you never have to know what it is like, because you couldn't handle it.
You know not everything in life is black and white. Have a Heart.
